* Pilot project for international transfer of industrial carbon removals under the Paris Agreement
Background and First phase: The Swedish Energy Agency and the Swiss Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication signed a memorandum of understanding at COP28 in 2023 to pilot the transfer of a small symbolic number of credits between voluntary market actors (buyer and seller) in the two countries. The pilot will proceed by enabling a transfer from Switzerland to Sweden. Due to current legal uncertainty from the EU, the Swedish transfer will be simulated to enable knowledge development.
Aims:
- Test the rules of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the EU and Swiss regulatory frameworks for removals.
- Contribute to a functioning market for removals.
- Promote understanding between public and private entities on the potential of Article 6 cooperation
